January 31, 2004 St. Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador Significant improvements have been made to the sewer system in St. Anthony with a $482,600 contribution under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Infrastructure Program (C-NIP). The C-NIP is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), on behalf of the Government of Canada, and the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. "The improvements included the elimination of an existing sewer outfall and the decommissioning of two malfunctioning sewage lift stations," said Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte, MP Gerry Byrne on behalf of the Honourable Joseph McGuire, Minister of ACOA. "There has been a new sewer main installed, as well as a new outfall located at the end of Marine Drive. The outfall has been extended further into deeper waters outside of the foreshore flats and submerged to a minimum of 2 metres below low tide. " "Under the Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program the province will cover $225,213 of the total project costs, with $96,520 coming from the municipality," said Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs. "We know that these cost-sharing programs help our municipalities afford much needed projects which will improve the quality of life for their residents." The federal government will provide $160,867 for the project, which will have the added benefit of improving the aesthetic appeal of an area known locally as Bottom Brook for possible tourism-related development. "The project will allow us to eliminate five residential service line discharges," said Curtis Richards, town manager of St. Anthony. "It will eliminate health risks and address the impact posed by open sewage in the community, and it is viewed as crucial to the overall development of the Bottom Brook area as a possible nature park." Green municipal infrastructure projects, such as water and waste water systems and solid waste management were identified as the priority for projects approved under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Infrastructure Program, which is administered federally by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and provincially by the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs. Under the five-year agreement, federal, provincial, and municipal governments will invest a total of $153.7 million in municipal infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labrador.
