No. H020/05 For release February 10, 2005 CANADA AND GUYANA CONCLUDE NEW AIR TRANSPORT AGREEMENT OTTAWA – Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre, along with International Trade Minister James Peterson, today announced the conclusion of the first air transport agreement between Canada and Guyana. ”The airlines of Canada and Guyana will now be able to operate scheduled air services between our respective territories,” said Mr. Lapierre. ”This will result in enhanced transportation options for air travellers and shippers.” ”This air transport agreement will further advance our relations with Guyana,” said Minister Peterson. ”It will build on 40 years of bilateral cooperation between our countries, by helping increase trade, investment and tourism.” This agreement gives Canadian airlines the right to serve Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, from any point in Canada. It also satisfies Guyanese interest in gaining access to the airport in Hamilton, Ontario. Each country may allocate, to its designated airlines, a total of four flights per week for passenger services and three flights per week for cargo services. It is expected that scheduled air services by one or more Canadian airline will be introduced as early as the summer of 2005. Prior to this agreement, air services between Canada and Guyana could operate on a charter basis only. With this agreement, both countries’ airlines can offer scheduled air services that provide travellers with more access to connecting flights, better travel networks, and easier trip planning. - 30 - Contacts: Irène Marcheterre Director of Communications Office of the Minister of Transport, Ottawa (613) 991-0700 Brian McGregor Communications Transport Canada, Ottawa (613) 993-0055 Jacqueline LaRocque Director of Communications Office of the Minister of International Trade (613) 992-7332 Media Relations Office International Trade Canada (613) 995-1874 Transport Canada is online at www.tc.gc.ca.
