February 1, 2005 Fredericton, New Brunswick Bulletproof Solutions Inc., a market leader in IT security analysis and network design, is developing a flexible, secure, new "clearinghouse" software system to enable police agencies to share data. Police information systems (known as RMS databases) are a vital part of policing and crime investigation. Currently, there are three different databases being used within police agencies in New Brunswick. This new software will connect the three different systems to allow the sharing of "secure" information - something that is currently not possible among the databases. The innovative software will be piloted by a group of municipal and national police agencies in New Brunswick in hopes of integrating all provincial police departments and eventually targeting national and international markets. "Bulletproof is an excellent example of innovation in the IT industry," said Andy Scott, MP for Fredericton, on behalf of the Honourable Joseph McGuire, Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). "The Government of Canada is proud to support the leading-edge work of companies such as Bulletproof - an IT firm that recognizes security issues are also opportunities for innovation in the information technology field." "The National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) is pleased to be involved in Bulletproof's software development project. The benefits of linking the RMS databases of various police departments will be substantial," comments David Healey, Executive Director for the Atlantic & Nunavut region of NRC- IRAP. "Such a system will be a breakthrough for our police in the sharing of crucial and time-sensitive information." "We are extremely grateful to ACOA and NRC-IRAP for their support of this project," said Steven Burns, President of Bulletproof Solutions. "This is a tremendous opportunity to pursue research and development within the security industry and it would not be possible without the involvement, dedication and continuous effort of these federal departments." To assist with Bulletproof's development of this security software, ACOA will contribute a repayable contribution of $500,000 under the Business Development Program. NRC-IRAP is contributing technical and business expertise as well as $300,000 towards salaries over the next 15 months. Incorporated in 2000, Bulletproof Solutions Inc. specializes in security analysis and networking for medium- sized companies in Atlantic Canada. The company got involved in IT research and development in 2004 and the security software is their first comprehensive R&D project currently being undertaken. ACOA's Business Development Program was created to provide repayable financial assistance to small- and medium-sized enterprises to establish, expand and modernize operations. NRC-IRAP is an agency of the Federal Government of Canada, established over 50 years ago to help innovative Canadian businesses.
