MINISTER GRAHAM PROMOTES GOOSE BAY TRAINING FACILITIES

February 15, 2005 OTTAWA, ON -- During his trip to Nice (France) where he attended the NATO Informal Meeting of Defence Ministers and Munich (Germany) where he took part in the Munich Conference on Security Policy, Defence Minister Bill Graham had several meetings with his European counterparts to promote the world-class training facilities available at 5 Wing Goose Bay. "My counterparts expressed interest in the new pricing policy and expanded possibilities for training," said Minister Graham. "We will be actively following up with our NATO allies to further promote the facilities and to strive to secure greater business for 5 Wing." While in Europe, Minister Graham discussed the new "pay as you go" pricing option to begin in 2006 as well as new training opportunities such as the use of chaff and flares and the availability of high-level aerial combat and supersonic flight. During his trip, Minister Graham had meetings to discuss the issue with Defence Ministers and representatives from the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway. National Defence is working with the Goose Bay Citizen's Coalition, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, local aboriginal groups and other federal government organizations to ensure that foreign militaries and the private sector alike get the message that "Goose Bay is open for business on a year-round basis." -30-
