February 16, 2005 (TORONTO) -- The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) today announced plans for a commemorative Terry Fox circulation coin that will begin circulating on April 4, 2005, just in time for the 25th anniversary of the Marathon Of Hope. The coin will be unveiled on March 14, 2005, at an event in Vancouver, British Columbia. "The Terry Fox coin speaks directly to the heart of all Canadians, and its message is one of hope. The entire staff of the Mint takes great pride in crafting this accessible symbol that celebrates one of the truly remarkable individuals of our time", said David C. Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope run in St. John's, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. For 143 days Terry ran the equivalent of a marathon (42 kilometers / 26 miles) every day. His strength and determination turned an otherwise ordinary teenager into a national hero and launch an ongoing campaign that has raised more than $360 million dollars for cancer research.
