OTTAWA, February 3, 2005 -- Industry Canada today announced that 306 licences have been conditionally assigned to 12 companies in the second phase of an auction of wireless spectrum. The auction generated $56.6 million in revenues for the Government of Canada. This spectrum will enable carriers to extend and enhance wireless broadband access and services in both rural and urban areas across Canada. The provisional licence winners of the second phase of the Two Phase Residual Licence Auction in the 2300 MHz and 3500 MHz Frequency Bands were announced following the auction, held January 10-27, 2005. Successful bidders are eligible to receive licences upon final payment. This auction demonstrates the Government of Canada's goal of building a 21st century economy by improving the Canadian information infrastructure and by enabling growth in the range of wireless telecommunications services available to Canadians. The confidentiality and authenticity of all bids conducted over the Internet were ensured through the use of Canadian public key infrastructure encryption and digital signature technologies.
