BANK OF CANADA ANNOUNCES RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP FOR 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2 March 2005 OTTAWA -- The Bank of Canada today announced that Professor Paul Beaudry of the University of British Columbia is the recipient of the Bank's Research Fellowship for 2005. Professor Beaudry is internationally recognized for his work in the field of macroeconomics, particularly labour markets, business cycles, and economic growth. "The Bank of Canada is proud to support the work of Professor Beaudry. His research on business cycle theory and on how medium-run structural factors affect growth will expand the discourse on the conduct of monetary policy," said Governor David Dodge. The Bank's Fellowship Program is designed to encourage leading-edge research and to develop expertise in Canada in a number of areas critical to the Bank's mandate: macroeconomics, monetary economics, international finance, as well as the economics of financial markets and institutions, including their stability. In 2003, the first year of the program, the Bank granted Fellowships to Professor Michael Devereux of the University of British Columbia and Professor Shouyong Shi of the University of Toronto. Professor René Garcia of the Université de Montréal was the 2004 Fellowship recipient. The Bank plans to award an additional Fellowship in each of the next two years, for a total of six Fellowships by the end of 2007.
