CFB GAGETOWN UTILITY TUNNELS DESIGN CONTRACT AWARDED

NR-05.020 - March 14, 2005 OTTAWA - Decades-old infrastructure running beneath Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Gagetown, connecting its buildings to various utilities, is being replaced and refurbished over the next several years. AMEC, an international project management and engineering services company with offices in Halifax, N.S., and Fredericton, N.B, has been awarded a $1.7 million contract to provide a detailed design for the refurbishment of underground utility tunnels and replacement of utility services at CFB Gagetown. The contract was awarded following a competitive bidding process. This is the first step in the planned replacement of the aging utilities distribution systems at CFB Gagetown, which are currently located in nearly nine kilometers of underground tunnels dating back to the base's construction in 1954. The project would bring structural improvements to the tunnel system, replace the high-temperature hot water heating system and upgrade the electrical distribution system. AMEC has previously designed the new Second Battalion, the Royal Canadian Regiment (2 RCR) garrison facility at CFB Gagetown.
