CRA is revoking registered charity status of the Lord's Evangelical Church of Deliverance and Prayer of Toronto

News Release

Ottawa, March 5, 2005... The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is revoking the registered charitable status of the Lord's Evangelical Church of Deliverance and Prayer of Toronto (the "Church"). The revocation is effective March 5, 2005 by way of a notice in the Canada Gazette canadagazette.gc.ca. The CRA determined that the Church was not complying with the rules as set out in the Income Tax Act. In particular, it was found that the Church had provided inappropriate gifts and improper benefits to members, and the Church did not keep adequate books and records. The Federal Court of Appeal agreed that the Church was in contravention of the requirements of the Income Tax Act and that the Minister's decision to revoke was correct. As a consequence, the CRA is revoking the Church's charitable status. The vast majority of the more than 80,000 Canadian registered charities operate within the rules set out in the Income Tax Act. However, when an organization is not complying with these rules and, thereby harming public trust in charities, the CRA takes an active role to ensure compliance by all registered charities. The CRA reminds Canadians to find out about an organization before they donate. For example, prospective donors should find out whether an organization is registered for tax purposes, how much of its funds are spent on charitable work, and what kinds of charitable work it performs.
