OTTAWA, March 4, 2005 -- The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has provided $24,850 to three applicants to support their participation in the environmental assessment, by comprehensive study, of the proposed Deltaport Third Berth project. The recipients are: Tsawwassen First Nation, the Boundary Bay Conservation Committee and William Liaskas. The funding is available through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency. A funding review committee, independent from the comprehensive study environmental assessment process, was appointed to examine all participant funding applications. The Committee members were: Dr. Patrick J. B. Duffy, Mr. John Mathers and Mr. Paul Scott, Director, Pacific and Yukon Region, Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. All of the Committee's recommendations were unanimous and are contained in the Report of the Funding Review Committee which is available on the Agency's Web site. The project is subject to an environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The federal Minister of the Environment recently determined that a comprehensive study is the most appropriate type of environmental assessment for the project. The Vancouver Port Authority is proposing to expand the existing Deltaport container terminal by adding to the existing land base to accommodate a third ship berth, additional container storage and associated facilities. The proposed Deltaport Third Berth Project is located 35 km south of Vancouver, at the existing Roberts Bank port facility. -30- The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
