GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS THE SALON DU LIVRE DE QUÉBEC

QUÉBEC, March 9, 2005 -- Minister of Transport and Minister responsible for Quebec Jean-C. Lapierre, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $101,530 in funding for the Salon du livre de Québec. The funds will enable the organization to hold this important cultural event in 2005 and 2006, and to promote Canadian writers and their works."I wish to thank the Salon organizers and volunteers for making this yearly event an unequalled place for literary explorations and meetings," said Minister Lapierre. "Each year, the Salon attracts thousands of visitors who come to this event to explore the creativity of writers from both this region and from across Canada.""Our government is committed to showcasing the talent of our writers, and I am delighted to support this book fair, which is a perfect example of its commitment," said Minister Frulla.This year, the Salon du livre will offer about 100 activities to the 18,000 readers expected to attend. Some 600 writers will be present, 175 of them from across Canada.Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Aid to Industry and Associations component of the Book Publishing Industry Development Program.
