Related Alerts OTTAWA, March 30, 2005 -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume Koon Yick Wah Kee Brand Chilli Oil and Giant Tree Brand Chilli Oil (sold in a set with Giant Tree Sichuan Preserved Hot Bean Curd With Sesame Oil). These products may contain the non-permitted colour, Sudan I, which is considered to be carcinogenic. The following products are affected by this alert: Koon Yick Wah Kee Brand Chilli Oil, 200 ml glass bottles, UPC 4 891049 888362, manufactured by Koon Yick Foods Shenzhen Factory, China. Giant Tree Brand Chilli Oil, 120 ml glass bottles, UPC 6 922492 289111, manufactured by Shenzhen Koon Yick Foods Co., Ltd., China. The Giant Tree Brand Chilli Oil was sold in a set with a bottle of Giant Tree Sichuan Preserved Hot Bean Curd With Sesame Oil. The bean curd is not known to contain Sudan I. The importer, Le Kiu Importing Co. Ltd., Vancouver, B.C. has voluntarily recalled these products from the marketplace. The affected products are known to have been distributed since April 2004 in Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia, and may have also been distributed in Ontario. Sudan I, a red dye, is not permitted as a food colour in Canada. Sudan I has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and these findings could also be significant for human health. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
