MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER ON THE OCCASION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF LA FRANCOPHONIE

News Release

March 18, 2005 Ottawa, Ontario On a continent where English is the dominant language, Canada's roughly 9 million Francophones are proof of an extraordinary vitality, and a determination to sow their culture and language in the hearts of future generations. In our world today, where the trend toward ever greater uniformity is constant, Canada's Francophone community is a model of success. It adds to the cultural and economic strength of our society ¿ a strength that is all the greater because it links us with the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, a network of 53 states and governments using French as a common language. In 2005, 'diversity' and 'excellence' are key themes for La Francophonie. We have reached a crucial stage in our joint efforts to promote cultural diversity around the globe, and La Francophonie has always been a valued partner in this undertaking. Next October, we hope that UNESCO will be able to adopt a convention on the diversity of cultural content and artistic expression. In addition, athletes and artists from all over La Francophonie will meet in Niger this December to take part in the fifth Games of La Francophonie, a major celebration of excellence and cultural exchange. On this International Day of La Francophonie, I want to thank Francophone Canadians who prove daily that diversity is synonymous with richness, vitality, and success. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish good luck to all the Canadian athletes and artists who will proudly represent us in Niger. May La Francophonie long endure, in Canada and around the world!
