OTTAWA, March 31, 2005 -- The Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), today appointed Dr. Gregory Kealey and Thomas Kierans to the Council. "I am pleased to welcome Dr. Kealey and Mr. Kierans as members of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council," said Minister Emerson. "As part of its transformation into a knowledge council, SSHRC is striving to facilitate the transfer of knowledge from our universities into practical applications benefiting society. I am confident these new members will provide the Council with innovative ideas and suggestions in this regard." Dr. Kealey is currently the Vice-President, Research, at the University of New Brunswick. Prior to this, he held various positions at Memorial University of Newfoundland, including Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and University Research Professor, a designation recognizing the university's most successful researchers. Dr. Kealey has received numerous grants, fellowships, prizes and appointments, including visiting professorships and being named fellow of both the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Kealey holds a B.A. from the University of Toronto, and a Doctoral degree in History from the University of Rochester in the United States. Mr. Kierans is currently the Chairman of CSI Global Education Inc., the Canadian Journalism Foundation and the Toronto International Centre for Financial Sector Supervision. Prior to this, he served as the President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute and held senior positions at Nesbitt, Thomson and Company Limited; Pitfield, Mackay, Ross and Company Limited; and McLeod Young Weir (now ScotiaMcLeod Inc.). Mr. Kierans holds an MBA from the University of Chicago and a Honourary LL.D. from Royal Roads Military College. He has been a member of the Business Council on National Issues, an Adjunct Professor at Queen's University and a Member of the Toronto Stock Exchange. In 2000, Mr. Kierans was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. SSHRC is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions.
