Paul Côté appointed as president and CEO of VIA Rail

No. H032/05 For release March 14, 2005 PAUL CÔTÉ APPOINTED AS PRESIDENT AND CEO OF VIA RAIL OTTAWA — Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre today confirmed the appointment of Mr. Paul Côté as president and chief executive officer of VIA Rail Canada Inc. "I would like to thank Mr. Côté for accepting this important leadership position," said Mr. Lapierre. "His extensive experience will continue to serve VIA well. I would also like to thank the Standing Committee on Transport for their timely review of this appointment." On February 1, 2005, the Minister proposed Mr. Côté for the position. He then referred the appointment to the Standing Committee on Transport for review. The review process was completed on March 9, 2005. Paul Côté was granted a bachelor of arts degree by l’Université de Montréal in 1970. Following six years with Canadian National Railways in their passenger rail division, Mr. Côté began a long and distinguished career with VIA Rail in its marketing group in 1978. He held three different vice-president’s positions with VIA between 1992 and 2000 prior to assuming the position of chief operating officer in 2001. In February 2004, Mr. Côté agreed to act as interim president and CEO of VIA while maintaining his chief operating officer responsibilities. VIA Rail Canada Inc., a Crown corporation created in 1977, operates Canada’s national passenger rail service.
