March 12, 2005 Fredericton, New Brunswick Science East is launching the Science Literacy and Awareness Initiative, which aims to promote science and innovation across the province as well as position the organization's Science Centre as a must-see family tourism destination. This new strategic programming will allow Science East to stage unique science exhibitions on a regular basis, not only in Fredericton, but also in numerous urban and rural communities throughout New Brunswick. Among the upcoming exhibits, Science East plans to acquire a portable planetarium that will become a key tourist attraction during summer as well as a first-rate educational tool for schools and other provincial organizations during the school year. "The Government of Canada is pleased to support Science East in its efforts to raise young people's awareness of science and technology, a field that is vital for the development of New Brunswick's innovation capacity," said the Honourable Andy Scott, MP for Fredericton, on behalf of the Honourable Joseph McGuire, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. "We are also proud to support the development of a top-notch quality tourism product in the province." "Science East is pleased to partner with ACOA to increase science literacy and awareness across our Province," said Agnes Murphy, President of the Board of Directors for Science East. "Too often our youth are turned off science by the perception that it is dry, dull and just for geeks. However, we know that if you give them open-ended time to play in a hands-on environment, they will not only discover science is enjoyable but will also gain an understanding of basic concepts that they can later build on and use creatively. This ACOA program will enhance our capacity to create non-threatening, fun, educational environments in which they can do just that." The Government of Canada is investing $188,475 through ACOA's Business Development Program (BDP). The funding will also allow Science East to create two new positions: a marketing and business development manager and an exhibit and outreach coordinator. These positions will allow the team to strengthen existing strategic partnerships with the educational community and develop new ones with the tourism sector and the business community. Located in the heart of Fredericton, in the old provincial jail, Science East is an educational and fun destination of choice for families. Science East is a spellbinding, fun- filled and enchanting place that offers a variety of hands- on exhibits for exploring, learning and understanding science. It is designed to stimulate family interest in science and technology as well as arouse the curiosity of young people, instilling in them the passion for knowledge and the inclination for careers in science.
