2005 Snow Crab Management Plan - Area E

MONCTON - The Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced details of the 2005 snow crab management plan for Area E in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Total Allowable Catch (TAC) is set at 450 tonnes (t). The sharing formula applies, therefore allocating 366 t to traditional fishers, while 84 t are reserved for temporary allocations. These allocations will be distributed on the same basis as in 2004. The mesh size of 65 mm for crab traps will be implemented in 2008. "I wish to congratulate Zone E fishers who decided to move ahead with the vessel monitoring system before the implementation schedule. This gesture, as demonstrated by these fishers, is a sign of their leadership in protecting the resource", said Minister Regan. A five-year co-management arrangement (2003-2007) with a sharing formula was put in place in 2003.
