Grand-Remous, Quebec, April 15, 2005 - The Honourable Jacques Saada, Minister of Canada Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Francophonie, today announced $145,950 in non-repayable financial support to the fishing management organization, Pêche sportive du réservoir Baskatong, to build a walleye interpretation centre. "This new facility will inform and educate visitors not only on walleye rearing but also on the stocking and protection of this species of fish. Visitors will be able to learn all about this magnificent body of water and the quality of fishing available," said Mr. Saada. The Baskatong Reservoir has grown steadily over the years. The region boasts about 30 outfitters offering some 1,500 accommodation spaces in addition to 1,800 camping spaces. "The new interpretation centre will of course enhance the Outaouais's tourism industry, but better still, it will bring to light the efforts being put into maintaining and protecting this resource for the greater enjoyment of all Baskatong Reservoir users," noted Minister Saada. Canada Economic Development's mandate is to promote the economic development of the regions of Quebec. Primarily through financial assistance programs, the Agency elicits and supports the implementation of economic development projects. The two priorities the Agency has set itself are to foster innovation and the knowledge economy in each region of Quebec, and to help communities that are having difficulty adjusting to the new economy. In this way, the Agency contributes to the attainment of the Government of Canada's objective of building the 21st Century economy. Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget. - 30 - Sources: François Bélisle Communications Canada Economic Development Tel.: (819) 825-5260 Ext. 235 francois.belisle@dec-ced.gc.ca Daniel Dezainde Press Secretary Office of the Honourable Jacques Saada Canada Economic Development Tel.: (514) 496-1282
