Government of Canada Invests $7.3 Million to Support Sustainable Development in the Animal Production Industry

News Release

Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, April 27, 2005 -- The Honourable Jacques Saada, Minister of Canada Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Francophonie, today announced that the Government of Canada is providing financial assistance totalling $7.3 million to the Université de Montréal's faculty of veterinary medicine to implement an environment/animal production technological platform, REPA (Réconcilier environnement et production animale). The new facilities will generate research programs aimed at developing new technologies promoting sustainable development in animal production enterprises while ensuring food quality and safety. "The Government of Canada wants to provide its citizens with an economy allowing them to look to the future with confidence and optimism. To build the 21st Century economy Canadians want, we need to be innovative in fostering our best regional assets. It is in this context that we have provided our financial support to the Université de Montréal's faculty of veterinary medicine for the REPA platform project. In addition to creating some 20 research positions, our investment will further broaden the expertise and services in the areas of agrifood, the environment and veterinary medicine available in the Saint-Hyacinthe region. We are confident that this new research infrastructure will be a success and that the commercial benefits will impact on the agrifood industry across the country," stated Minister Saada. Government of Canada funding for this initiative comes from the Canada Foundation for Innovation ($4.8 million) and Canada Economic Development ($2.5 million). Canada Economic Development's mandate is to promote the economic development of the regions of Quebec. Primarily through financial assistance programs, the Agency elicits and supports the implementation of economic development projects. The two priorities the Agency has set itself are to foster innovation and the knowledge economy in each region of Quebec, and to help communities that are having difficulty adjusting to the new economy. In this way, the Agency contributes to the attainment of the Government of Canada's objective of building the 21st Century economy. Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget. - 30 - Sources: Hélène St-PierreCommunicationsCanada Economic DevelopmentTel.: (514) 283-2583E-mail: helene.st-pierre@dec-ced.gc.ca Daniel DezaindePress SecretaryOffice of the Honourable Jacques SaadaCanada Economic DevelopmentTel.: (514) 496-1282
