OTTAWA, April 6 - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, will present the 2004 Michener Award for meritorious public service in journalism and the 2005 Michener- Deacon Fellowship on Thursday, April 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Rideau Hall. The six finalists for the 2004 Michener Award for meritorious public service in journalism are the Calgary Herald, the Canadian Medical Association Journal, CBC, the Globe and Mail, the Newfoundland Independent, and SRC. Finalists were selected from 51 entries. The Governor General will also present a certificate to Jenny Manzer--a freelance journalist from British Columbia who has been chosen to receive the 2005 Michener-Deacon Fellowship. Established in 1987, the Fellowship helps to advance education in the field of journalism and to foster promotion of the public interest through values that benefit the community. Launched in 1970 under the auspices of Canada's third Canadian Governor General, the late Roland Michener, the award focuses on the degree of public benefit generated by media projects, both large and small, in print and broadcast. The annual award is open to daily and weekly newspapers, news agencies, radio and television stations and networks as well as periodicals. The winners are chosen on the basis of hard-hitting impact, journalistic professionalism, and the resources available for the project.
