Longfield Announces Funding in Whitby Marina Floating Pier Project

News Release

WHITBY - The Honourable Judi Longfield, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and Housing and Member of Parliament for Whitby-Oshawa, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will share in the funding of a new floating pier at the Port of Whitby Marina in Ontario. "The City of Whitby has consistently managed and maintained the area's waterfront assets for the benefit of the community," said Ms. Longfield. "This project will ensure the continued safe operation of the Whitby facility." The Whitby facility consists of extensive infrastructure, including entrance piers, a marginal wharf, a launching ramp and floating dock system. The project, which is currently underway, involves the construction of a new floating dock string. It is anticipated that the entire project will be completed shortly and that the facilities will be fully operational for the 2005 boating season. The project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Branch. -30- For More Information: Theresa Nichols Communications Manager Fisheries and Oceans Canada Sarnia, Ontario (519) 383-1804
