New School Provides Youth of Waycobah First Nation With An Exciting and Dynamic Learning Environment

WHYCOCOMAGH, NOVA SCOTIA (April 26, 2005) -- A new community school has been announced today for the Waycobah First Nation. Rodger Cuzner, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso, on behalf of the Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, joined Chief Sandy Googoo, of the Waycobah First Nation, for the announcement. "The new facility will provide the local youth of Waycobah better access to a more positive and productive learning environment," said Mr. Cuzner. "I am sure we all agree that education is the key to long-term, sustainable success. The federal government is committed to investing in better education for Aboriginal youth and part of that investment means better schools in First Nations communities." "This is a dream come true for us," said Chief Sandy Googoo. "It's the beginning of a new journey for our people; one that will help restore our culture and language, and let our youth be educated right here in the community. We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this happen." The Government of Canada expressed its commitment to education with the contribution of $7.5 million to the Mi'kmaw Kina'matenewey towards the construction of two new schools over the next five years, while the 10 member MK communities will provide the remaining amount required. Mi'kmaw Kina'matenewey (MK) is a Mi'kmaq run organization that maintains jurisdiction over all education for 10 member Mi'kmaq communities in Nova Scotia. The new on-reserve school for the Waycobah First Nation will be designed and constructed to accommodate a kindergarten to grade 12 program, and will be focal points for each community, providing modern facilities and learning technologies, as well as space for community services and gatherings.
