Statement

April 22, 2005 The health and well-being of all people are affected by the environments where we live, work and play. We face daily challenges in maintaining our health and protecting it from such threats as environmental degradation, climate change, industrial development and urban growth. But as we are constantly reminded of the planet's vulnerabilities, we are also coming to know what it means to be the custodians of the Earth. Many of the causes and impacts of environmental threats can be minimized by taking an integrated approach to the environment and public health. In Canada, governments at all levels are working with communities and individuals to take up this challenge. This means being leaders on sustainable development and working with legislative tools like the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. It also means establishing benchmarks such as the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality, partnering with agricultural and other industries to eliminate the sources of pollution, and supporting individual Canadians in doing their part through initiatives like the One Tonne Challenge. Earth Day is a day to reflect on our individual roles. For me, it is a reminder to continue to ensure that Canada's public health goals, which we're currently consulting on across the country, take environmental concerns in account. On this Earth Day, please join me in reflecting on how the environment affects our health. Do your part to make our planet, and yourself, healthier.
