20th Anniversary of the Barrie Tornado

BARRIE, Ontario, May 26, 2005 -- Environment Canada’s Meteorological Service, Emergency Management Ontario and the City of Barrie are making a joint effort to promote public awareness of the importance for Canadians to protect themselves against the results of high-impact weather events. The media technical briefing promoting this effort will be held in Barrie on May 30th to mark the 20th anniversary of the May 31, 1985 Barrie tornado, which was one of the most powerful and devastating tornadoes ever recorded in Canada. The purpose of the event is to demonstrate how the intervening 20 years improved weather prediction have made a difference in enhancing awareness of risks, consequences and potential strategies by Canadians, and to ensure Canadians are better prepared to protect their families and properties by promoting public awareness of extreme weather events in their communities.
