ACOA Supports Charlottetown's 150th Celebrations

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island - Further details of upcoming activities to support the City of Charlottetown's 150th Celebrations were announced today. The events planned throughout 2005 are expected to stimulate tourism and community growth while complementing already existing activities and festivals. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency's contribution of $237,950 to the City of Charlottetown will help develop activities for the celebrations. "The numerous events organized to celebrate the city's history are anticipated to appeal to many Island and off- Island visitors. Charlottetown will gain from positive economic impact in light of this memorable occasion," said the Honourable Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown. "I congratulate the city council and all the volunteers for their efforts to make the 150th Celebrations interesting and appealing." A highlight event is "The 150th Explosion" which will be held on Canada Day in partnership with the Atlantic Superstore Festival of Lights (June 30 to July 3, 2005). "The 150th Explosion" will celebrate the anniversary year with the largest and most spectacular fireworks display in Canada. The show will combine an on-stage pyrotechnic show, close proximity fireworks, remote fire locations from the top of the Delta Prince Edward and significantly enhanced fireworks over the Charlottetown waterfront. In an effort to generate consumer awareness and promote city pride, 150th Celebration custom streetscape banners and signage will be mounted throughout the downtown core and at main entry points including the Charlottetown Airport. Riding on the wave of the Idol craze, the 150th Celebrations will welcome the 2004 Canadian Idol Kalan Porter to Charlottetown. He will be part of a family concert on July 3 that will be held on the Atlantic Superstore Festival of Lights stage. Porter will be teamed with Cirque Plus - Born out of the "nouveau cirque" style of performance popularized on every continent by Cirque Du Soleil. "With 2005 being the 150th Anniversary Year of the Incorporation the City of Charlottetown is celebrating in grand style with a full year of events and projects that will create further legacies," said Mayor Lee.
