Chan Announces a Federal Investment of $930,000 for Harbour Improvements at Steveston Harbour

Richmond, B.C. - Raymond Chan, Minister of State (Multiculturalism) and Member of Parliament for Richmond, announced today on behalf of Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest $930,000 in repairs to the federal harbour at Steveston, in British Columbia. ¿Steveston harbour is a very important facility for the community,¿ said Minister Chan. ¿The upgrading and maintenance of this facility demonstrates the Government of Canada¿s commitment to the community of Steveston and the City of Richmond.¿ Natural infilling of the harbour basin makes dredging necessary at this site. The Nelson Pond area will be dredged this year to ensure the harbour maintains an adequate depth to continue to serve harbour users. Other infrastructure repair and replacement projects at Steveston include the: repair of buildings 19 and 20, which have experienced deterioration and settling of the foundation structures. This project will reduce long-term repair costs, and ensure continued use of the buildings by commercial fishers. reconstruction of wharf 406 through the replacement of deteriorated structural timbers and placement of a new concrete wharf deck. This project will ensure that vehicle and loading operations on this wharf can be safely accommodated. repair of wharf 403 by reconstructing the wharf¿s timber sub-structure as well as resurfacing the deck. The wharf-head has been partially barricaded for safety purposes due to deterioration of its substructure and concrete components. This project will re-establish the required operating load capacity of the wharf. final phase of float reconstruction will continue this year with the reconstruction of the remaining floats at Nelson Pond. This work will reduce long-term repair costs and ensure user and vessel safety. These projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local Steveston Harbour Authority that manages and operates this facility for the benefit of local users.
