Fry Announces Federal Funding for Harbour Improvements at False Creek

News Release

VANCOUVER - Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, announced today on behalf of Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest funding for repairs to the federal harbour at False Creek. "The harbour facility at False Creek is an important facility for area commercial fishers," said Fry. "I am very pleased to see the federal government has recognized the significance of this facility to the commercial fishing community of Vancouver." The harbour, located on the south shore of False Creek between the Burrard and Granville Street Bridges, is the only federal commercial fishing harbour within the City of Vancouver's boundaries. These funds will allow for the reconstruction of two lines of floats at the dock and repair of an access ramp which has corroded over time. This project will reduce long-term maintenance costs and ensure the continued safe use of the harbour. This project will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local Harbour Authority that manages and operates this facility for the benefit of local users. It is this close cooperation which enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishing and recreational users. -30- For more information: Dan Bate Communications Officer Fisheries and Oceans Canada Vancouver, BC 604-775-8809
