Government of Canada to Begin Construction of New Building in Charlottetown

Charlottetown, P.E.I., May 16, 2005 - A $29.1 million competitive contract has been awarded to Hervé Pomerleau Inc. to construct the new multi-tenant green Government of Canada Building in Charlottetown. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Scott Brison, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, and Shawn Murphy, MP for Charlottetown. "I am very pleased to award this contract and see construction of the building move forward," said Minister Brison. "This new building will be the most environmentally friendly building ever built by Public Works and Government Services Canada. Our goal is to achieve a LEED (Leadership Energy and Environment Design) Gold Standard, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable development across government." Construction is expected to begin in June 2005, and the building will be ready for tenants in the summer of 2007. It will be home for a number of federal departments, including Veterans Affairs Canada as the main tenant. As such, it will offer one-stop shopping for many government services and save taxpayers' dollars. "The residents of Charlottetown look forward to having this new flagship Government of Canada Building in the downtown core of our city," said Shawn Murphy. "The Government of Canada stands firm on its commitment to maintaining a strong presence here in Charlottetown." The contract will have a positive impact on Charlottetown's economy. Not only will it create about 100 jobs during construction, this building will symbolize the Government of Canada's expertise in building sustainable office accommodation. The new building will replace the Dominion Building in Charlottetown, which was constructed in 1955. At this time, no decision has been made on the government's plans for the Dominion Building. The contract for the new Government of Canada Building was awarded following an open, transparent and competitive process. A total of four bids were received for the contract.
