Ottawa - Today, all parties in the House of Commons unanimously agreed to proceed with second and third reading of Bill C-45, the historic legislation supporting the New Veterans Charter. With pride the Honourable Albina Guarnieri, Minister of Veterans Affairs noted that, "there is strong consensus among political parties and veterans' organizations for progressive legislation to give practical meaning to long overdue service and program reforms for those who served in Canada's Armed Forces. I commend my colleagues in the House of Commons for coming together to provide for a healthy, productive, and independent future for Canada's veterans and their families. This legislation would provide them the modern services, programs and benefits they deserve." All party support, and quick passage through the House of Commons means this critical legislation will not die in the event of an election. It also means that C-45 can quickly move to the Senate for consideration leading to Royal Assent. The Honourable Romeo A. Dallaire, a Canadian Forces (CF) veteran and Senate Sponsor of the New Veterans Charter added that, "I am deeply committed to the New Veterans Charter and am confident that my colleagues will closely work with me to ensure this important social contract between veterans and fellow Canadians is enacted as effectively as possible." The New Veterans Charter is focussed on wellness and independence for veterans and their families. The Charter ensures that help is there for those who need it most. It provides a comprehensive range of modern programs and services that can be accessed in a timely way, as and when needed by CF veterans. It is the most sweeping change to veterans legislation since the end of the Second World War. "Throughout the consultation process, the active involvement of veterans' organizations and the Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) - Canadian Forces Advisory Council provided VAC with crucial input and direction," added Minister Guarnieri. The Charter is the latest example of Veterans Affairs Canada and the Department of National Defence working together to provide CF members with a healthy, productive and independent future after their service to Canada. The spirit of cooperation and collegiality extended beyond government, with veterans and peacekeeping organizations fully engaged, contributing their knowledge and support. The Minister added that, "the Charter is the result of many Canadians working for a common goal. All deserve a special 'Thank You'." -30- Media Enquiries: Janice Summerby Media Relations Advisor Veterans Affairs Canada (613) 992-7468 Corey Hobbs Director of Communications Office of the Minister of Veterans Affairs (613) 996-4649 All Other Enquiries: 1-866-522-2122 information@vac-acc.gc.ca
