Transport Minister announces appointments to Via Rail

TRANSPORT MINISTER
ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS TO VIA RAIL
OTTAWA — Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre today announced the
appointments of Ms. Angela Ferrante of Toronto, and Ms. Margaret MacInnis of
Halifax, to the board of directors of VIA Rail Canada Inc.
"Ms. Ferrante’s impressive background in public affairs and business and
Ms. MacInnis’s knowledge of the government environment and law are
welcome assets to VIA Rail," said Mr. Lapierre. "Their combined experience will
serve them well as they take up their duties on the board of directors."
Ms. Ferrante began her career as a reporter and political commentator for the
Montreal Star. She accepted the position of feature writer at the
Montreal Gazette in 1974 and worked as assistant managing editor of
Maclean’s newsmagazine. She left Maclean’s for the position
of executive vice-president and chief operating officer of the C.D. Howe
Institute, where she also held the position of vice-president and chief
administrative officer. Ms. Ferrante worked as vice-president, public affairs, for
Ontario Power Generation Inc. and senior vice-president of corporate
communications for BMO Financial Group. She is currently chief operating officer
at the Ontario Energy Board.
Ms. MacInnis was appointed the first deputy minister of the Office of
Aboriginal Affairs with the Nova Scotia government. Ms. MacInnis also participated
in the realization of the Highway 104 toll highway project, a high profile
public-private partnership. Prior to holding these positions, she practiced law
for a variety of government departments and agencies, including the Petroleum
Directorate and the Department of Transportation and Public Works where she
specialized in interpretation and drafting of legislation and regulations. She is
currently doing consulting work with her own company.
VIA Rail Canada Inc., a Crown corporation created in 1977, operates
Canada’s national passenger rail service. The board of directors is
responsible for the management of the business activities and other affairs of the
corporation.
