Atomic Energy of Canada Limited: Efford Appoints Harding to Board

OTTAWA - The Honourable R. John Efford, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, today announced the appointment of Robert J. Harding as a member of the Board of Directors of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL). "Mr. Harding brings a wealth of experience and expertise that will certainly benefit AECL," said Minister Efford. "His solid perspective on governance, extensive experience with the investment community and strong understanding of financial management will further strengthen the decision-making team at the helm of this important Crown corporation." Mr. Harding has been with Brascan Corporation for more than 20 years in a number of senior executive positions, including serving as President (1992-97) and as Chair (1997-present). He is also the Chair of the Board of Governors of the University of Waterloo and of BPO Properties Ltd. He is a member of the boards of Noranda Inc., Burlington Resources, Falconbridge Limited, Fraser Papers Ltd. and Norbord Inc. Mr. Harding graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics. He obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1981 and was made a Fellow Chartered Accountant in 2000. AECL is a customer-driven Crown corporation that develops, markets and manages the construction of CANDU® power reactors and MAPLE research reactors, carries out reactor research, supplies CANDU and light-water reactor support services, and offers radioactive waste management products and services. AECL, the design authority for CANDU nuclear power reactors that provide emissions-free electricity to the world, is completing the development of an innovative next-generation system - the Advanced CANDU Reactor (ACR).
