OTTAWA - Sunday, June 5 th , marks the fourth annual Canadian Forces Day, a day when Canadians have the opportunity to salute the men and women of the Canadian Forces. "Canadian Forces members are devoted to serving this nation, often at considerable cost to themselves and their families," said Bill Graham, Minister of National Defence. "Canadian Forces Day gives all Canadians an opportunity to thank and recognize our military personnel and their families for their tremendous contributions to peace and security at home and around the world." "As the Canadian Forces transform to meet new challenges, our men and women in uniform continue to demonstrate outstanding dedication and commitment to their work," said General Rick Hillier, Chief of the Defence Staff. "They are Canada's sons and daughters representing the very best of Canadians at home and abroad. We are all heartened by the important recognition bestowed on the Canadian Forces on this special day." The theme for Canadian Forces Day 2005 is "Proudly Serving Canadians at Home and Abroad." At home, Canadian Forces members aid in search and rescue and disaster relief missions, and help to secure our borders and protect Canadians against the threat of terrorism. Around the world, Canadian Forces members contribute to peace and global security by participating in peace support operations, delivering humanitarian assistance, and promoting human rights, freedom, and democracy. On May 31, 2002, the Prime Minister proclaimed that, henceforth, the first Sunday in June would be celebrated as Canadian Forces Day. This proclamation was made in response to a unanimously adopted Private Member's Motion that reflected Canadians' interest in our forces, and their wish to express their gratitude for Canadian Forces members' service.
