Government of Canada Places High Priority on Quality Canadian Television

News Release

OTTAWA, June 13, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla has set out some upcoming changes to the governance and administration of the Canadian Television Fund (CTF) and announced $100 million in funding for the CTF for the fiscal year 2006-2007. This funding represents an extension of the annual support that the Government of Canada has provided in the past. It will provide stability while steps are being taken to put the changes in place."The Canadian Television Fund is an essential component of our broadcasting system," said Minister Frulla. "The CTF is the most appropriate support mechanism to ensure Canadians get what they want and deserve -- high-quality, distinctively Canadian programming. This investment of $100 million will assure the industry of our commitment and allow it to focus its attention on implementing governance changes."The Canadian Television Fund was established in 1996 as a private-public partnership. It supports the creation and broadcast of Canadian programming in English, French, and Aboriginal languages across all regions of Canada. Since 1996, the Government of Canada has contributed more than $800 million to the Fund, resulting in $5.7 billion worth of quality Canadian television productions."This announcement confirms the Government of Canada's commitment to supporting the production and broadcast of Canadian programs that play an important role in our cultural landscape," added Minister Frulla. "Since its inception, the CTF has helped bring more than 18,000 hours of original Canadian programming to the screen."Minister Frulla pledged that, with changes to governance and administration in place, she will work with her Cabinet colleagues toward attaining long-term federal government funding for the CTF in the 2006 Budget. She made her remarks at the Banff World Television Festival. This annual festival, which attracts people from around the world, is dedicated to the development of business and creative opportunities for those in the television programming and new media industries.
