Government of Canada Supports Commemoration of 250th Anniversary of Great Upheaval

News Release

MONCTON, June 6, 2005 -- Senator Pierrette Ringuette, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $200,000 in funding for the Société Nationale de l'Acadie (SNA). The funds will allow the organization to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Great Upheaval by organizing special activities to take place in Grand Pré, Nova Scotia, and other Acadian communities in Atlantic Canada. The deportation of Acadians, commonly called the Great Upheaval, began on September 5, 1755 and continued until 1763. This period had tragic effects on thousands of Acadian men and women. The Government of Canada recognized the historical significance of the Great Upheaval by way of a Royal Proclamation and designated July 28 as "A Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval.""Acadians never abandoned their dreams, their ambitions, or their desire to build a better society. The Great Upheaval is a testimony to their unwavering determination," said Senator Ringuette."The celebrations that the SNA will organize will help all Canadians learn more about an important chapter in our collective history," added Minister Frulla. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Deportation, the SNA will organize ceremonies and shows in several Acadian communities in Atlantic Canada. For more than 122 years, the SNA has been dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights and interests of Acadians in Atlantic Canada. Commemoration of the Deportation is another significant achievement in the recognition and promotion of Acadian cultural identity and Canada's official-language communities. Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
