Health Canada to receive FDA Award

OTTAWA - The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will present Health Canada with an award today to acknowledge the work the department has done over the last several years to enhance its ability to protect, not just the health of Canadians, but the health of all North Americans. "Advancing and protecting the health of Canadians is Health Canada's mandate," said Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh. "This award recognizes years of hard work with our colleagues from the United States and Mexico and demonstrates the dedication of Government of Canada staff toward achieving our mutual goal of improving the health of citizens on our shared continent." The FDA Leveraging/Cooperation award recognizes Health Canada's commitment to addressing health challenges and furthering health goals across North America through its role in the Canada-Mexico-US Trilateral Cooperation Charter - a collaborative agreement between the FDA, the Health Products and Food Branch (HPFB) of Health Canada and Mexico's Federal Commission for the Protection from Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS). Members of the FDA and COFEPRIS will also receive the award. The Competition Bureau and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency are also active members of the Trilateral Cooperation and contributed greatly to the work recognized by the award. All members of the Cooperation have also received letters of recognition from the FDA for their work. The Canada-Mexico-US Trilateral Cooperation provides the three countries with an effective way to work closely together to better protect, promote and advance human health in North America. Its purpose is to increase communication, collaboration and the exchange of information in the areas of drugs, biologics, medical devices, food safety and nutrition to protect and promote human health in North America. The Trilateral Cooperation establishes working groups with representatives from each country to work on issues of mutual concern. One area of recent focus has been in strengthening the ability of each country to respond to continent-wide emergencies related to health products and food. Two emergency response exercises were successfully conducted helping the Cooperation recognize how the countries can work together to improve trilateral emergency procedures.
