Ottawa, June 6, 2005 -- "Our environment, our respect and love for the land and sea is a source of national pride for Canadians. We are a nation built on a bountiful sea, rich forest and fertile soil. For more than 30 years, Canadians of all ages, from coast-to-coast-to coast have celebrated our environment and the actions Canadians can take to protect and enhance this natural legacy during Environment Week. Today, more than ever, we recognize that a strong and healthy environment is vital to ensuring long term economic growth and sustainability. This recognition has placed the concern for our environment for protection, conservation and a commitment to environmental technologies and partnerships at the forefront of government decision-making. The Government of Canada is working to ensure the highest level of environmental quality while enhancing the health and well-being of Canadians, protecting the natural environment and advancing Canada's competitiveness. Initiatives such as our $5 billion in green economy environmental investments contained in Budget 2005, and the introduction of the first phase of Project Green Our Plan for Honouring our Kyoto Commitment will help ensure that generations for years to come will have access to cleaner and safer air, water and land. The Government of Canada takes its role very seriously and is doing its part to transform our economy into a model of sustainability. But, our future depends on the collective ambition of all our people. We are all stewards of our environment and must all work together to do our part to create a healthier and cleaner environment for ourselves, our children and grandchildren. Join me in celebrating Environment Week this year by taking action for our environment our efforts today will create the legacy we leave for future generations tomorrow.
