About HRSDC | Our Offices | Programs & Services | A-Z Index June 13, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 05-44 OTTAWA, ONTARIO-The Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing, today announced the appointment of Mr. Stan Lanyon as part-time Vice-Chairperson of the Canada Industrial Relations Board. "Mr. Lanyon has great experience at a senior level in the field of labour relations. His vast involvement at various levels of government and in the private sector will be an asset for the Canada Industrial Relations Board," said Minister Fontana. Mr. Lanyon has been in private practice since 1996 as arbitrator and mediator in numerous areas of the private, public and government sectors. In 2002, he reviewed multiple proceedings in the Workplace Administrative Law Project for the Ministry of the Attorney General. In 2000, he was part-time chair of the Labour Relations Board of British Columbia, and in 1999, he participated in the legislative review of the Taxi Industry and the Motor Carrier Commission in British Columbia. From 1997 to 2005, Mr. Lanyon was adjudicator for the Yukon Public Service Staff Relations Board and the Yukon Teachers Staff Relations Board. From 1997 to 1998, he co-chaired the Legislative Review of the B.C. Labour Relations Code and the Construction Industry Review Panel. From 1992 to 1996, he was chair of the B.C. Labour Relations Board and, finally, from 1966 to 1990, Mr. Lanyon occupied positions as Crown Counsel, In-House Counsel and lawyer for several organizations and in private practice. A graduate from the University of British Columbia (Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts), Mr. Lanyon taught from 1989 to 1997 at the University of British Columbia as Adjunct Professor Director for the Centre for Labour and Management Studies - Faculty of Commerce, and Adjunct Professor for the Faculty of Law - Labour policy. He has spoken at numerous provincial, national and international conferences, seminars and meetings regarding labour relations issues in British Columbia. He is currently a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators. Mr. Lanyon has published over 30 publications, papers and reports in the area of law. The most recent one published in 2002 is entitled A review of Adjudication of Workplace Disputes: Multiple Proceedings. The Canada Industrial Relations Board, which came into effect on January 1, 1999, is an independent representational, quasi-judicial tribunal whose mandate is to interpret and apply the provisions under Part I of the Canada Labour Code dealing with bargaining rights and unfair labour practices.
