Technical Briefing for the Media - Canada's Participation at the 25th Meeting of the Working Group - Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer

MONTREAL, June 23, 2005
From June 27 to July 1, Canada will be participating in the 25th meeting
of the Open-ended Working Group of the Parties to the Montreal Procotol
on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
The Montreal Protocol was signed in Montreal in 1987and currently has 188
Parties. It is one of the most successful international environmental treaties
and has resulted so far in the global phase-out of the production and consumption
of over 80 percent of ozone-depleting substances; over 95 percent phase-out
in developed countries and 97 percent in Canada.
Members of the Canadian delegation will explain the main agenda, reveal
the progress Canada has made under the Protocol and explain its position
on issues of discussion at the meeting.
