Young Canadians to Learn the Importance of Diversity and Active Citizenship

TORONTO, June 9, 2005 -- Member of Parliament (Davenport) Mario Silva, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $62,060 in funding for TEACH magazine. The funds will enable this publication to develop a set of learning materials that will explore themes of active citizenship, diversity and multiculturalism in Canada. "I am very pleased that we are partnering with TEACH magazine to develop tools aimed at helping youth to gain a better appreciation of our country," said Mr. Silva. "This project will help youth understand and explore our common values and the meaning of shared citizenship.""Our youth represent the future of our country," added Minister Frulla. "We have a responsibility to teach them the importance of playing an active role in our communities, as well as making them aware of our society’s rich cultural diversity."The aim of this project is to produce resources for teachers to help students develop their critical thinking and communication skills, while exploring Canadian values. Four bilingual lesson plans will be developed under the headings of Equity, Diversity, Peace and Interdependence. The learning materials will be directed at youth, as well as their educators at the elementary and secondary levels. Lesson plans will appear in issues of TEACH magazine, beginning in spring 2005. They will also be available on the Web.Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Studies Program.
