Government of Canada Supports Aboriginal Heritage Gardens

EEL RIVER BAR, July 26, 2005 -- Member of Parliament (Madawaska--Restigouche) Jean-Claude D'Amours, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $200,000 in funding for the Eel River Bar First Nation. The funds will enable the Aboriginal community to develop indoor and outdoor interpretative exhibits at the Aboriginal Heritage Gardens."The Aboriginal Heritage Gardens will enable visitors to learn about how Aboriginal peoples lived in New Brunswick for thousands of years," said Mr. D'Amours. "The Gardens will also contribute to our region's economic development.""Canada is blessed with a rich heritage of Aboriginal cultures that are unique in the world," said Minister Frulla. "I am proud to support this project, which will contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal peoples' contributions to building our country."The Aboriginal Heritage Gardens is a heritage-based tourist attraction located in Northern New Brunswick. Developed by the Eel River Bar First Nation, the Gardens were designed to showcase the Mi'kmaq community's rich ancestral heritage, as well as its members' use of indigenous plant species for food, medicine, and cultural purposes. The Gardens are expected to open in the summer of 2006.Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under its Museums Assistance Program.
