OTTAWA, July 27, 2005 -- The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is pleased
to announce that it has been awarded a contract valued at US $3.5 million to
produce 50 million El Peso de la Republica Dominicana (Pesos) for the
Dominican Republic. The circulation coins will be produced in denominations of
RD$1.00, RD$10.00 and RD$25.00, and will be manufactured using alloy metal at
the RCM's facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
By producing the RD$10.00 and RD$25.00 Pesos coins, the RCM is assisting
in the introduction of two new monetary denominations in the Dominican
Republic.
"The Royal Canadian Mint is committed to expanding our foreign
circulation business and contract wins such as this support our plans for
continued growth and success," said CEO and President, David C. Dingwall. "We
will continue to demonstrate the Mint's tradition of quality and efficiency,
as well as showcase that we are one of the world's premier mints."
This is not the first time the RCM has provided currency for the
Dominican Republic. The first contract dates back to 1937. Today's
announcement follows the RCM securing a $10 million contract in early July to
produce 400 million 2 Baht Thailand coins.
The Royal Canadian Mint produces over 1 billion Canadian circulation
coins annually. The Crown Corporation also competes against other Mints for
international contracts and has produced coins and coin blanks for over
60 countries in the last 25 years.
