OTTAWA - The Honourable R. John Efford, Minister of
Natural Resources Canada, today announced the appointment of Daniel M. Kammen to
the National Advisory Panel on the Sustainable Energy Science and Technology (S&T)
Strategy. The Panel provides advice on Canada's energy science and technology
priorities to help Canada develop sustainable energy solutions for the future.
"Dr. Kammen will make a valuable contribution, given his international
perspective on, and vast experience in, energy research and the development and
diffusion of energy technologies," said Minister Efford. "The diverse expertise
possessed by this S&T
Panel will help the Government of Canada to identify future opportunities and
challenges in developing clean energy solutions that benefit our economy."
Dr. Kammen's work focuses on renewable energy science and engineering, energy
efficiency, national and international energy policy, international climate
debates, and the use and impacts of energy sources and technologies on
development, particularly in Africa and Latin America. Dr. Kammen is the Class
of 1935 Distinguished Chair in Energy at the University of California, Berkeley,
where he also holds appointments in the Energy and Resources Group, the Goldman
School of Public Policy and the Department of Nuclear Engineering. He is the
Co-Director of the Berkeley Institute of the Environment, as well as the
founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory at
Berkeley, where his research team examines a wide range of science, engineering,
economics and policy projects related to energy systems and the environment.
Dr. Kammen received his undergraduate degree in Physics from Cornell
University (1984) and his master's and doctorate degrees in Physics from Harvard
University (1986 and 1988). He serves on the board of the Utility Reform Network
and the Technical Review Board of the Global Environment Facility. He also
serves as a technical advisor to the Union of Concerned Scientists and is a
Permanent Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences.
The S&T Panel was
announced in May 2005 and will conclude its work in December 2005, at which time
it will report back to the Minister of Natural Resources with advice on what
Canada's energy S&T
priorities should be and the best ways to deliver on these priorities. Its
report will serve as a foundation for the Sustainable Energy Science and
Technology Strategy announced in Budget 2005. This Strategy will also support
the Technology Investment Fund a fund that provides an alternative means
for large emitters to meet their emissions targets through support for the
development and deployment of innovative technologies that reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. Both the Strategy and the Fund are key components of Canada's
recently announced Project Green and its plan Moving Forward on Climate
Change: A Plan for Honouring our Kyoto Commitment.
