Participants in a Technology, Trade and Investment Mission
to Norway, led by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
(ACOA), have returned to Canada with solid business leads
and first-hand knowledge of the latest techniques and
technologies being used in the aquaculture industry in
Norway and around the world.Representatives from 23 companies and organizations from
across Atlantic Canada participated in the mission, held
August 8 - 12, 2005. The mission coincided with Aqua Nor
2005, the world's largest aquaculture trade show, held in
Trondheim, Norway every two years. Canada was the featured
nation at this year's event, which elevated the Canadian
industry's international status and provided exclusive
platforms for mission delegates to interact with industry
leaders from Norway and other countries.This mission to Norway was led by the Minister of ACOA, the
Honourable Joseph McGuire, in partnership with Newfoundland
Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA), Fisheries and
Oceans Canada, National Research Council Canada -
Industrial Research Assistance Program, and the Canadian
Embassy in Norway."We have achieved our objectives here in Norway," stated
Minister McGuire. "Our companies and organizations are
leaving Norway armed with valuable information and insight.
They have established business relationships and leads for
long-term export sales. Atlantic Canadian companies have
proven that they are leaders in the international
aquaculture community." While attending the show, the delegates met with fish
farming specialists from around the globe to discuss the
newest products and technologies in the aquaculture
industry. The mission participants also visited
aquaculture farms and research institutions, attended
networking events, technology exchange forums and one-on-
one meetings with key industry players and research
specialists.During the mission, Minister McGuire also took advantage of
the opportunity to showcase Atlantic Canada to potential
investors. On August 11, he hosted an Investment Breakfast
for Norwegian business leaders, Atlantic Canadian delegates
and international companies, where he promoted Atlantic
Canada as a profitable place to do business. "Our proximity to markets, our robust and modern business
infrastructure, and our competitive costs all make Atlantic
Canada a very good location for new investment and business
opportunities," said Minister McGuire."This mission was an obvious success from a business and
research perspective and provided various opportunities to
develop partnerships with organizations from around the
world," said Mike Rose, Executive Director of the
NAIA. "The Atlantic Canada delegation will continue to
benefit from this experience for years to come. The
participants are bringing back solid business leads for
potential partnerships and export sales." Norway is one of Canada's most important Nordic trading
partners, ranking second after Denmark. Canadian exports to
Norway totalled $1.5 billion in 2004 while Atlantic Canada
