Ceremony at the National War Memorial marks Merchant Navy Veterans Day

News Release

Ottawa - A wreath laying ceremony was held today at the National War Memorial in Ottawa to commemorate the 2nd Anniversary of Merchant Navy Veterans Day, which was first declared in September, 2003. The Honourable Albina Guarnieri, Minister of Veterans Affairs, joined veterans of Canada's Merchant Navy, dignitaries, and youth to mark this special occasion.
"The history of Canada's Merchant Navy is a story of fortitude, bravery and achievement. The ships and the men who served on them made the difference between victory and defeat for our Allies," said Minister Guarnieri. "Efforts such as today's ceremony pays tribute to those achievements, and honours the legacy of our Merchant Mariners and helps preserve your memories for future generations."
There was no battle more crucial in the history of Canada's wars than the battle to maintain the sea lanes of supply to Britain. In both the First and Second World Wars, the men and women of the Allied merchant navies faced overwhelming odds against the enemy and kept their ships sailing despite unparalleled loss.
