KEEP KIDS SAFE - CHILD SEAT RESTRAINTS SAVE LIVES

OTTAWA - As another school year begins, Transport Canada would like to remind Canadians to use appropriate child car seats when driving with children.
Children should be properly placed in an appropriate child restraint system to help ensure their safety in the event of a collision. Different ages and weights call for different child car seats. Parents should be aware of which child restraint systems are appropriate for their children.
Transport Canada has a four-stage safety program called Car Time, which helps parents understand which child restraint system is needed to safely transport their children in the back seat of a motor vehicle.
These stages are:

Stage 1 -
a rear-facing infant seat to protect children who cannot yet sit unassisted
(generally children less than one year old)
Stage 2 -
a forward-facing child car seat for children too small for an adult belt
(generally children one to four-and-a-half years old)
Stage 3 -
a booster seat for older children to correctly position the adult belt on
the child's body (generally children four-and-a-half to eight years old)
Stage 4 -
an adult belt in the rear seat of the vehicle, correctly positioned over the
pelvis and shoulder (generally children eight to 13 years old)

Always read the instruction booklet that comes with your child restraint system and make sure to buckle empty child restraint systems seats in the vehicle so they are secure in the event of a sudden stop.
Two provinces, Ontario and Quebec, have laws requiring the use of booster seats for children when travelling in a vehicle. Please check with your provincial transportation department for more information.

has fact sheets available for each of the four stages. The fact sheets are
filled with important safety tips that everyone should keep in mind.
