The Honourable R. John Efford, Minister of Natural Resources and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, today issued the following statement:
"While I have been struggling with my health for the last several months, I still require additional time to work with my doctors to regain control of my diabetes. My reduced schedule this past summer was an important first step in better management of my condition, and I am optimistic my new treatment program will prove effective over the long term.

"As my ability to travel is limited and my doctors advise me to remain close to my primary medical care, I will be remaining in Newfoundland and Labrador as much as possible.

"I would like to make it clear that I am not resigning from my position. I will be available for key votes in the House and other important issues as my heath allows.

"I will continue to work with my Cabinet colleagues to ensure that the interests of Newfoundland and Labrador continue to be represented at the Cabinet table.

"Minister McCallum's vast experience will be of great benefit during this time, and I look forward to consulting with him on a regular basis to ensure continuity of the excellent work being carried out by Natural Resources Canada.

"It is my hope that my health will improve to a level that will allow me to resume my day-to-day duties as Minister of Natural Resources Canada, and to also offer for re-election when that time comes.

"I wish to extend my sincere thanks to the Prime Minister for agreeing to relieve me of some of my responsibilities during my current health challenges. I also would like to thank my colleagues and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador for their understanding and continued support."
