CARAQUET, October 28, 2005 – A $473,011 competitive contract has been awarded to JRJ Construction Limited, of Caraquet, New Brunswick, to reconstruct part of the wharf at Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphael, in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. Awarded on behalf of the Small Craft Harbours (SCH) program of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, this contract will be completed in June 2006.
The announcement was made today by the Honourable Andy Scott, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, on behalf of the Honourable Scott Brison, Minister of Public Works and Government Services.
“This contract demonstrates the fact that New Brunswick companies have what it takes to win federal contracts,” said Minister Scott. “I am glad that a local company will be reconstructing the
Sainte-Marie wharf. The federal government recognizes the importance of this wharf to the local fishing economy.”
The company will replace the last bay of the existing timber breakwater with a new timber cribwork construction. It will also build a concrete deck reinforced with new concrete beams.
The Small Craft Harbours (SCH) program works in partnership with local harbour authorities in five regions across the country to provide commercial fishers and boaters with safe and accessible facilities. The SCH program ensures that nearly 1,300 harbours and 6,000 structures, critical to the economic and social life of small maritime communities, remain safe and in good repair.
