OTTAWA – The Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced that Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency, will provide further support to help the victims of the devastation caused by Hurricane Stan.
"The people affected by this disaster are in desperate need of shelter, clean water, and basic houehold items," said Minister Carroll. "Canadians are reaching out to the victims, and this contribution will help to alleviate the suffering of those who have lost their homes and livelihoods."
Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency, will provide:
$ 550 000 to the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) to respond to the immediate needs in Central America, Mexico, and Haiti. The IFRC will provide kitchen utensils, hygiene kits, blankets, roofing and construction kits and mosquito nets; $ 150 000 to OXFAM Canada to work with three local women's organizations to undertake immediate humanitarian assistance in Guatemala by providing basic shelter, household items and clean drinking water;$ 100 000 to local non-governmental organizations in El Salvador to address emergency humanitarian and reconstruction initiatives;$ 100 000 for emergency relief and reconstruction carried out by local organizations in Guatemala; $ 60 000 to Rapid-Span for the construction of bridges that will restore transportation links lost in the flooding in Guatemala;$ 50 000 to local organizations in Mexico for immediate assistance and reconstruction.
On October 11, Canada announced $ 1 million to assist victims of floods and landslides in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Stan. Those funds were used for emergency aid and relief efforts of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Pan American Health Organization and World Vision Canada. Today's announcement brings Canada's total contribution to over $ 2 million.
Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 Federal Budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
