Government of Canada Supports Skate Canada International

ST. JOHN'S, October 28, 2005 -- The Honourable R. John Efford, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Stephen Owen, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport), today announced an investment of $35,000 towards the 2005 MasterCard Skate Canada International. The event takes place from October 27 to 30, 2005 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The Government of Canada is proud to support our athletes and contribute to this event, said Minister Efford. Hosting international events enables Canada's best skaters to compete against some of the world's top athletes in front of a home crowd. This event also provides Newfoundland and Labrador an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to host a world-class competition. The 2005 Skate Canada International showcases our country's best skaters and provides them with valuable international competition experience as they work toward podium success, said Minister Owen.The MasterCard Skate Canada International is one of six qualifying events for the International Skating Union's (ISU) Grand Prix. Competitors accumulate points based on their placements to qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final to be held in December 2005 in Tokyo, Japan. The Government of Canada is the single largest investor in Canada's sport system. A total of $140 million is being provided in 2005-06 to support initiatives for high-performance athletes and to increase Canadians' participation in sport.
