Over 100 settlement workers from across Atlantic Canada
will gather later this week in Charlottetown, Prince Edward
Island to discuss ways to facilitate the settlement,
integration and retention of new Canadians in their
community.Fostering a Community Approach to Successful Immigrant
Settlement is the theme of this conference which is being
organized by the Prince Edward Island Association for
Newcomers to Canada on behalf of the Atlantic Region
Association of Immigrant Serving Agencies. The conference
will take place October 26 to 28, 2005 at the Rodd
Charlottetown Hotel."The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency recognizes the
importance of immigration in the economic development of
our region," said the Honourable Joseph McGuire, Minister
of ACOA. "This conference will provide insights to all
stakeholders involved in the immigration sector and
possible solutions for retaining more new Canadians in
Atlantic Canada."The conference will give immigrant serving agencies and
government officials from Atlantic Canada, an opportunity
to address important issues, policies and challenges
related to immigrant settlement, integration and retention
in Atlantic Canada. The particular focus of this conference
will be on fostering community partnerships for successful
settlement and integration."Immigration is an especially important issue these days.
This conference should help ensure that new ways to better
provide for the settlement needs of immigrants which is
essential for immigration strategies to be successful -
will be found," said Kevin Arsenault, executive director of
the Prince Edward Island Association for Newcomers to
Canada.The PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada is a not-for-
profit organization mandated to provide a wide variety of
settlement services and long-term social inclusion,
employment and community integration programs for
immigrants.ACOA provided financial assistance to this conference
through the Atlantic Policy Research Initiative which
supports ACOA-initiated external research, stakeholder-
initiated external research and related activities,
roundtables focused on various policy issues and
opportunity areas, as well as policy research conferences.
